Burglary suspect, lost in store, calls 911 on himself

Image
ADA, Okla. – A burglar called 911 to report himself after he was unable to find an exit from the building he was burglarizing, reports CBS affiliate KXII. Michael Garvin, 22, was found at Ada Family Eye Care just after 6 a.m. on Saturday, according to authorities.   When police arrived, Garvin reportedly threw a mirror at the officers and ran into the attic to hide before being taken into custody. Officers said he was not able to recall many details and seemed to be in unstable condition. Police believe the suspect simply could not find his way out of the store. “Our initial thought was that he called 911 and maybe he broke in and couldn’t find a way out and maybe he got scared,” said Officer Jeremy Farmer. Garvin was arrested for second-degree burglary as well as auto burglary because officers allegedly found a pair of keys in his possession that belonged to a vehicle from a nearby body shop. source: cbs

By Karen Anderson, WBZ-TV William Gross being sworn in as Mayor Marty Walsh and Commissioner William Evans looks on BOSTON (CBS) – Chief William Gross remembers when he moved to 32 Esmond Street in Dorchester from a farm in Maryland with his mother and two sisters when he was 12 years old. It was 1975, and the city was in the middle of busing, and race relations were at an all-time low. “Boston was in turmoil,” Gross remembers. “My mother would say, ‘Don’t go to Southie because there are people that don’t like you.’ I’m sure the kids from South Boston were told the same thing.” On Thursday, a man from South Boston, William Evans, was named Commissioner of the Boston Police, and Evans named Gross to be the first African American Superintendent in Chief of the department, the #2 person on the force. Evans said naming Gross to the Chief position is his first, and likely will be the best decision he will make as Commissioner. “He is well respected by the community w...

How A Bill Becomes Law

Image
Introducing A Bill Ideas for bills come from many sources: constituents, the President, lobbyists, or congressional staff. Any Senator or Representative may introduce a bill. After a bill has been written or "drafted," the member introduces it by formally presenting it to the House or Senate clerk when Congress is in session. In the House, the bill is placed in the "hopper" at the desk of the Clerk; the sponsor of the bill may or may not make a special statement about the bill when it is introduced. In the Senate, the bill may be presented to the Clerk, or the Senator may make a formal statement from the Senate floor to introduce it. Once a bill is introduced, it is given a number: H.R. _________ (for the House of Representatives) if introduced in the House and S. _________ (for the Senate) if introduced in the Senate. Bill numbers start with H.R. 1 and S. 1 at the beginning of each new Congress and continue in numerical order until the Congr...
