Shelly Sterling to sell Clippers to former Microsoft CEO Steve Ballmer

Image
The sale of the Clippers continued on its bizarre journey late Thursday night when representatives of co-owner Shelly Sterling sent out a media release that the Sterling family trust has agreed to sell the team to former Microsoft Chief Executive Steve Ballmer for $2 billion. Shelly Sterling asserted that she is acting as the sole trustee, with no mention of Donald Sterling, who bought the team three decades ago. Donald Sterling’s lawyers have asserted that he needs a final sign-off before the team can be sold. However, according to two media reports,  Shelly Sterling has said her husband was not capable of making the decision to sell the team. The Times has not verified that report. “I am delighted that we are selling the team to Steve, who will be a terrific owner,” Shelly Sterling said in a statement.  “We have worked for 33 years to build the Clippers into a premiere NBA franchise.  I am confident that Steve will take the team to new levels of success.” On T

Mother charged with abusing disabled daughter

MEMPHIS, Tenn. — A Memphis mother is charged with abusing her physically and mentally challenged daughter. Jennifer Cotten is charged with aggravated assault, abuse and neglect and violating bail conditions. This is not the first time Cotten has faced these charges. Cotten was ordered by a judge to stay away her from daughter after she left her in a hot car last summer. Instead, police say Cotten has been recklessly taking care of her daughter the entire year. The two lived in a house on Jamerson without electricity. Earlier this month, the house caught fire and Rebecca suffered severe burns. Carlos Rodriquez and his family didn not know the mother and daughter when they lived next door, but did see the fire. His young daughter Celeste doesn’t understand everything going on, but the 10-year-old knows something is wrong. “That is not her mom,” said Celeste Rodriguez. “That’s not her mom? Why do you say that?” asked WREG’s Elise Preston. “Because a

Mother faces attempted murder, child abuse charges in shooting of 11-year-old son

By COLTON LOCHHEAD LAS VEGAS REVIEW-JOURNAL   A mother with a history of drug abuse is facing an attempted murder charge in a shooting that left her 11-year-old son clinging to life, according to Las Vegas police. Shavon Carrillo, 31, who also goes by Shavon Aguilar, was booked on three counts of child abuse and one count of attempted murder Monday, about four hours after the boy was shot. The boy was taken to University Medical Center in what police called “extremely critical” condition. He is not expected to survive, police said. Two other children and an adult were in the apartment when the shooting happened, police said. None of them were injured. Carrillo shot her son with a 22-caliber rifle before trying to kill herself but was stopped by her brother-in-law, sources familiar with the investigation said Tuesday. Her two daughters were in bed in the same room as the boy, but it’s unclear if any of the children were awake at the time of the shooting

Washington woman: Husband shot, killed during bear hunt

Image
By Associated Press Published: May 29, 2014 LONGVIEW, Wash. (AP) - A southwest Washington woman says her husband was the 59-year-old American hunter who was shot and killed during a bear hunt in northern British Columbia. Shirley Cooper, of Toutle, told the Longview Daily News that her husband, Jeff Cooper, had been hunting a grizzly bear with guides. She says she was notified of his death by the Cowlitz County Chaplaincy on Tuesday after Canadian police contacted local authorities. Canadian police are investigating the incident, which happened Monday in a remote forest service area about 60 miles south of Houston, British Columbia. The man's family told the newspaper he wounded a grizzly Sunday night and tracked the bear down the next morning with two guides. The bear charged the group, and all fired. A bullet struck and killed Jeff Cooper.

Family blames General Motors for South Carolina man's death

1.6 million cars recalled for faulty ignition switch Liz Lohuis   GREENVILLE, S.C. — General Motors is coming under fire for what some are calling a botched recall that cost lives. According to documents filed with federal safety regulators, GM knew there were problems with an ignition switch in some of their cars but chose not to recall them. Allen Ray Floyd died in July 2009 in Horry County.  His family is suing GM, saying the company's carelessness led to his death. “A 26-year-old wound up dead.  It's pretty devastating,” said Victoria Burrows, the victim’s aunt. Burrows said it was a clear sunny day.  Her nephew Allen Ray Floyd was less than a half mile from home when his car veered off the road and crashed into a tree.  He was killed. “After a while you get over the hurt, and then you become angry about it,” said Burrows. The car was a 2005 Cobalt. Attorneys for Allen's family believe it was a faulty ignition switch that caused him to lose contr

2 year old dies after falling from Dorchester daycare building

Image
BOSTON ( MyFoxBoston.com ) -- The mother of 2-year-old child boy who died after falling from a building in Boston is blaming the woman who runs the daycare center on the first floor of that building for his death. Boston police say the incident happened at 129 Columbia Road in Dorchester. The boy, Daylan Walker, was transported to Boston Medical Center, where he was pronounced dead at about 10:40 a.m. The child was attending a daycare facility run out of an apartment on the first floor of the building, and investigators are looking into how Daylan wandered from the first floor to the fourth floor and onto the roof. Daylan's mother, Leonela Rivera, said Daylan loved to play with cars, and that he was not the type of child to wander off alone. "He would never step outside without our permission," she said. Parents whose children attend the daycare were notified of the death and told to pick their children up. Many appeared visibly upset over the

Famed poet and author Maya Angelou died this morning in North Carolina. She was 86. "She'd been very frail and had heart problems, but she was going strong, finishing a new book," Angelou's agent Helen Brann told ABC News. "I spoke to her yesterday. She was fine, as she always was. Her spirit was indomitable."  Angelou recently canceled an appearance at the 2014 MLB Beacon Awards Luncheon, where she will be honored. Major League Baseball cited "health reasons" Friday in saying the 86-year-old won't make it to the May 30 event in Houston before the annual Civil Rights Game, the Associated Press reported last Friday. "Her family is extremely grateful that her ascension was not belabored by a loss of acuity or comprehension. She lived a life as a teacher, activist, artist

Dangerous Dosage of Ambient for Women Causes Change

Image
By Evie Salomon   When Lesley Stahl's 60 Minutes report "Sex Matters" aired in February, the story appeared to strike a nerve in Washington, D.C. The National Institutes of Health announced Wednesday that it will change its policies to ensure that female animals and cells are included, and sex differences analyzed, at all stages of the scientific process. As Stahl and 60 Minutes producer Shari Finkelstein reported, differences between the sexes are dangerously understudied in scientific and medical research. And, drugs can affect men and women differently, but scientists routinely study only male animals, fearing that female hormone fluctuations might muddy their results. "It has been remarkable to see the movement on this issue just in the few months since we broadcast our story," Finkelstein says. In an article published in the journal "Nature," Dr. Francis Collins, director of the NIH, and Dr. Janine A. Clayton, director of the

TEHRAN, Iran (AP) — A billionaire businessman at the heart of a $2.6 billion state bank scam in Iran, the largest fraud case since the country's 1979 Islamic Revolution, was executed Saturday, state television reported. Authorities put Mahafarid Amir Khosravi, also known as Amir Mansour Aria, to death at Evin prison, just north of the capital, Tehran, the TV reported. The report said the execution came after Iran's Supreme Court upheld his death sentence. Khosravi's lawyer, Gholam Ali Riahi, was quoted by news website khabaronline.ir as saying that the death sentence was carried out without him being given any notice. Death sentences in Iran are usually carried out by hanging. "I had not been informed about the execution of my client," Riahi said. "All the assets of my clien
