High School teacher obtains restraining order against student

WESTERLY, R.I. (AP) — A Westerly High School teacher has obtained a temporary restraining order against a student accused by officials of threatening to hurt her and “shoot up the school.”

The Westerly Sun reports that the student also is forbidden from school grounds.

Maryjane Utley, head of the Westerly High School Science Department, obtained the restraining order on Friday against the unidentified male student. He had been suspended twice for alleged threats against the school and Utley.

Utley’s lawyer, Michael Lynch, said district and school administrators failed to immediately provide Utley with details. He also said the administration failed to notify other teachers or the parents of the students who heard the threats.

School officials say they worked closely with Westerly police and followed School Committee policies.
