A Rap Song About Paris Hilton
There's a rap song about the iconic heiress and Hollywood socialite Paris Hilton and it crept up out of nowhere, literally. Written and performed by MC Spice The Legend, the song Paris Hilton takes the listener into the world of Hollywood where the rapper shows up for a party at a nightclub and Paris Hilton is the DJ. The catchy chorus "living my best life in Hollywood and Paris Hilton is my deejay", caught the ears of Ice T manager and Art Of Rap tour co-founder Mickey Bentson, who signed MC Spice to his PayUp Records label. Says Benston, "this guy [MC Spice] has something. He knows what the people want to hear and he's bringing back the artistry of Rap music, with a kaleidoscope of song styles. He's not afraid to be an artist."
The radio stations that caught on right away, knew they were dealing with another Hiphop artist who would push the envelope, the way Lauryn Hill, Black Eyed Peas, Bone-Thugs-N-Harmony, and Outkast does. In fact, MC Spice The Legend credits the late Heavy D for inspiring him to make music the radio and mature audience would appreciate.
Having grown up on Hiphop music and Culture, MC Spice The Legend signed to Atlantic Records at seventeen years old, making him the first rap artist to sign to the label. Since then, he has written a number of gold and platinum songs, including Good Vibrations and Wildside by Marky Mark Mark and the Funky Bunch (Interscope).
The Paris Hilton song was "running around" in Spice's head for nearly two years before he decided to record it and release it. The highlight of his song for the socialite-turned-DJ came when MC Spice (also known as the Original MC Spice) posted info about the song on his Instagram profile, Paris Hilton responded:
A few days after her public response to MC Spice's Instagram post, the rapper sent Paris Hilton a message in her Instagram DM and she again responded:
To say the rapper was ecstatic is an understatement. Of Paris Hilton's two responses, MC Spice exclaimed: "A good friend of mine, we call him Uptown - he always says you gotta keep it real with yourself. I'm keeping it very real. Paris Hilton's two-word "that's hot" response on my public Instagram post was worth more than a whole paragraph, and her one-word response "Lit" in my Instagram Direct Message was confirmation she appreciated the song. As an artist, that's always a big deal when your work is appreciated."
The Paris Hilton song has an accompanying video, featuring the puppets "Chili and Punk" created by famed cinematographer Scott Kalvert. The director is credited for the films Basketball Diaries, Dueces Wild, and Lost In Reality 2. Kalvert created music videos for Cyndi Lauper, Bobby Brown, Snoop Dogg, Marky Mark and the Funky Bunch, and Will Smith. Unfortunately, Scott would never see his puppets on the world stage, as the director took his life in March of 2014. His wife Sonia Kalvert and his partners Dave Horgan and Charlie Jambetta gave MC Spice the puppets on license and placed the video for sync with the Paris Hilton song.
"In essence, Scott and I worked together when I wrote songs for Mark Wahlberg, so it's only fitting we work together on my debut single, albeit posthumously. I remember his hard work, and how much he did for Hiphop. His puppets were his passion and he wanted to see them make it in Hollywood. This is for you, Scott", says MC Spice.
The single Paris Hilton is available on the double album Grown Folk Hiphop.
