8 YEAR OLD KILLED IN BOSTON BOMBING

Three people are dead and at least 78 injured after after two powerful explosions went off near the Boston Marathon finish line.

A law enforcement official confirmed that one of two people killed in today’s explosions was an 8-year-old. So sad! We’ve also learned authorities found 5 other bomb devices…only 2 exploded.

President Barack Obama said he ordered the “full resources of the federal government” to respond to the Boston bombing and that he also called for increased security around the United States as necessary.

“All Americans stand with the people of Boston,” Obama said. Obama said that any individuals or groups responsible for the “senseless” bombing in Boston will “feel the full weight of justice.”

On the marathon’s Facebook page, there’s reference to the blasts as bombs. Authorities did not say immediately what caused the explosions. Officials are working to dismantle other bombs in Boston, a law enforcement source says.

Massachusetts General Hospital said it was treating 19 injured people; Tufts Medical Center reported that some injured were to be treated there as well. The explosions sent smoke billowing into the air at Copley Square, turning a site of celebration into a mess of destruction.

Out of an abundance of caution, the Lenox Hotel was evacuated, the Boston Globe reported, as authorities looked into possible security concerns.

Officials in other cities, including New York and Washington, D.C., tightened security as a result. The explosions occurred at about 2:45 p.m., more than two hours after the first of the race’s nearly 27,000 runners had crossed the finish line.

The race was halted as was subway service into the area. The FBI and troops from the Massachusetts National Guard were assisting police.

Witnesses reportedly heard two booms near the finish line inside the Fairmount Copley Plaza Hotel that sounded like two claps of thunder.

Competitors and race organizers were crying as they fled the chaos. Bloody spectators were being carried to the medical tent that had been set up to care for fatigued runners.

“There are a lot of people down,” said one man, whose bib No. 17528 identified him as Frank Deruyter of North Carolina. He was not injured, but marathon workers were carrying one woman, who did not appear to be a runner, to the medical area as blood gushed from her leg. A Boston police officer was wheeled from the course with a leg injury that was bleeding.

About three hours after the winners crossed the line, there was a loud explosion on the north side of Boylston Street, just before the photo bridge that marks the finish line. Another thunderous explosion could be heard a few seconds later.

Runner Laura McLean of Toronto said she heard two explosions outside the medical tent. “There are people who are really, really bloody,” McLean said. “They were pulling them into the medical tent.”

Cherie Falgoust was waiting for her husband, who was running the race. “I was expecting my husband any minute,” she said. “I don’t know what this building is … it just blew. Just a big bomb, a loud boom, and then glass everywhere. Something hit my head. I don’t know what it was. I just ducked.”
