Mother faces attempted murder, child abuse charges in shooting of 11-year-old son
Shavon Carrillo, 31, who also goes by Shavon Aguilar, was booked on three counts of child abuse and one count of attempted murder Monday, about four hours after the boy was shot.
The boy was taken to University Medical Center in what police called “extremely critical” condition. He is not expected to survive, police said.
Two other children and an adult were in the apartment when the shooting happened, police said. None of them were injured.
Carrillo shot her son with a 22-caliber rifle before trying to kill herself but was stopped by her brother-in-law, sources familiar with the investigation said Tuesday. Her two daughters were in bed in the same room as the boy, but it’s unclear if any of the children were awake at the time of the shooting.
The mother has a history of methamphetamine abuse and was stressed because of financial problems, sources said.
Police initially were called to the apartments at 5228 Pebble Beach Blvd., near Vegas Drive and Decatur Boulevard, just after 5 a.m. Monday and found the boy inside with a gunshot wound to the head.
Carrillo’s record includes convictions of forgery-related charges and a separate drug possession charge, according to court records.
Neighbors at the Pebble Beach Boulevard apartments didn’t seem to know much about Carrillo or her family.
Neighbors said Tuesday they never heard much noise from the family, but did see the children who lived in the apartment playing outside often.
An attempted murder charge implies that there was an intent to kill, according to Nevada law. The charge carries a two- to 20-year prison term if convicted.
Each child abuse charge carries an additional two to 20 years in prison if convicted.
Carrillo is scheduled to appear Wednesday before a Clark County district judge.
