Bosnian Immigrant Made Up Story About Being Attacked by Black Teens

DzanicA St. Louis woman told police that she was attacked by a group of black teens who dragged her from her car, then left her unconscious. The woman admitted to police on Monday, however, that she made up the story.

Seherzada Dzanic’s allegation that she was attacked came only days after a Bosnian man was beaten to death in a nearby neighborhood, causing the Bosnian community in St. Louis to fear that they were being singled out.

Zemir Begic was driving in the Bevo Mill area when he was fatally beaten by a group of teens with hammers. Like Begic, Dzanic had claimed that she too was driving in Bevo Mill when three black teens ordered her out of her car at gunpoint.

She originally alleged that the three teens destroyed her cell phone and threatened to kill her because she was Bosnian. But instead of killing her, Dzanic said her assailants threw her to the ground, where she was later found unconscious.

Dzanic’s story sparked an FBI hate crimes investigation and inflamed racial tensions in the Bosnian community. Now, however, police say Dzanic made up the entire story because she was suffering from emotional issues.
