Actor in Mark Wahlberg Films Killed by Massachusetts Police
A Massachusetts man who had small
roles in major Hollywood movies was fatally shot early Monday by police
officers who had responded to a fatal stabbing, authorities said. Paul
Campbell, 49, was agitated and armed with at least one knife when police
arrived to the Weymouth home he shared with his mother, who was dead of
multiple stab wounds, NBC affiliate WHDH
reported. The two officers who responded to a 911 call from the home
made simultaneous decisions to shoot Campbell, and both struck him,
officials said.
He was taken to South Shore Hospital, where he was
pronounced dead.
Campbell's mother,
72-year-old Patricia Campbell, was found fatally stabbed at the front of
the house, police said. The district attorney is investigating the
police shooting, and wouldn't say whether Paul Campbell lunged at
officers or whether their actions were justified, WHDH reported.
Campbell was childhood friends with Boston native Mark Wahlberg, who
scored him the part of a toothless crack addict in 2010's "The Fighter,"
neighbors told the station. Campbell also had bit parts in the 2012
Wahlberg comedy "Ted" and the 2013 hit "American Hustle," according to
multiple reports.
He has a daughter with
the current girlfriend of Boston Mayor Marty Walsh. "This is an ongoing
investigation and it is not my place to speculate on why or how this
happened," Walsh said in a statement, according to WHDH.
