Dominican Born Aimee Carrero To Voice Disney’s First Latina Princess

Disney just announced that Aimee Carrero is going to be the voice of Elena, their first Latina fairytale princess.

The new Disney television series Elena of Avalor, premiering in 2016, cast Dominican Republic born Hollywood actress Aimee Carrero to be the voice of a 16-year old fairytale princess.

Carrero co-stars on the television series Young and Hungry on ABC, which is owned by Disney. She plays Sofia Rodriguez, the protagonist’s best friend.

Princess Elena will first appear on an episode of the popular children show Sofia The First. Elena was magically trapped in a medallion that Sofia – who is also a princess – wears to communicate with animals. Once Sofia (who may or may not have Hispanic roots) releases Elena from her entrapment, Elena will return home to reclaim her kingdom, Avalor.

Nancy Kanter, Executive Vice President and General Manager, Disney Junior Worldwide, said that the network is producing a Latino and Hispanic inspired animation series geared for children 2-7-years old.
“What excites us most is the chance to use distinctive animation and visual design to tell wonderful stories influenced by culture and traditions that are familiar to the worldwide population of Hispanic and Latino families and reflect the interests and aspirations of all children as told through a classic fairy tale.”
According to Disney’s press release the episodes on Elena of Avalor will be “guided by an established curriculum that nurtures multiple areas of child development: physical, emotional, social and cognitive; thinking and creative skills, as well as moral and ethical development”. The network continued to say, “the stories are designed to communicate positive messages and life lessons that are applicable to young children about leadership, resilience, diversity, compassion and the importance of family and family traditions”.

Run-D.M.C. Producer Larry Smith Dead at 63

Larry Smith, producer of some of the most cherished hip-hop records of the Eighties, including Run-D.M.C. 's first two albums, died Thursday at the age of 63. Radio host Combat Jack broke the news on Twitter , writing: "Just spoke to his family. RIP Larry Smith, the original King of Beats who passed away last night." A Queens native, Smith began his career as a session musician and quickly struck up a partnership with Kurtis Blow after playing bass on "Christmas Rappin'."  Smith would continue to play on a number of Blow's tracks, co-writing a few as well, including the MC's breakthrough record, "The Breaks,"  which became the first rap record to be certified gold. Smith then began working with Blow's manager at the time, Russell Simmons.
