Racist Police Officers Fired Because of Leaked Text Messages
Sheriff Phil Plummer revealed that Sheriff’s Captain Thomas J. Flanders and Detective Michael J. Sollenberger were both placed on indefinite administrative leave, from the Ohio department, after someone leaked dozens of racist text messages they had been sending to each other and three other deputies.
Captain Flanders was the head of the Montgomery County Jail, where many allegations of racism and discriminatory treatment of inmates has been common throughout the years.
Sollenberger, for his part, has been involved in internal affairs, which would in fact be the unit which investigated such allegations… See how that works?
Sollenberger was also a member of the Montgomery County SWAT team.
The messages, sent between November 2011 and January 2013 made direct derogatory references to Black deputies and citizens.
“The word Nigger was used several times as well as other racial slurs and jokes,” Plummer explained.
“Racism will not be tolerated in this office.”
Some of these text messages include statements like: “What do apples and black people have in common? They both hang from trees.”
“I hate Niggers. That is all,” the two suspended cops said to one another..
“Very simply put, they’re Niggers, son,” another deputy texted.
The messages were leaked by an anonymous source, who contacted the Dayton chapter of the NAACP.
The group then made the sheriff aware of the situation, back in August 2014.
Sheriff Plummer said that the deputies “did not apologize.” Now he has released a statement that both officers have had their employment with the Montgomery County Sheriff’s Department terminated.
The three other deputies involved in the racist text exchanges will be suspended, Plumber says, because they “admitted their mistakes.”
Deputy Joseph Connelly was suspended for 30 days without pay for unethical conduct. Deputy Jamie Horton has been suspended 10 days for unethical conduct. Finally, Sergeant Brian Lewis was suspended for three days, due to having only had one racist text exchange with the now terminated deputies..
