NATICK – J.C. Penney Corporation Inc. confirmed Friday it is closing its anchor department store at the Natick Mall at the end of August.
Company spokesman Joey Thomas said the Natick JCPenney store will close on or about Aug. 28.
“We continually evaluate our store portfolio to determine whether there’s a need to close or relocate underperforming stores,” Thomas said in an email Friday. “Reviews such as these are essential in meeting our long-term goals for future company growth.  While it’s never an easy decision to close stores, especially due to the impact on our valued associates and customers, we feel this is a necessary business decision.”
He said the Natick store has about 95 employees. Eligible employees who don’t remain with the company will receive separation benefits, Thomas said.
The company said it is offering an on-site career training class and will assist employees, if possible, in finding other jobs at nearby JCPenney stores.
The Natick store first opened in 2007, occupying a space that had been recently vacated by Macy's.
Based in Plano, Texas, the company has other stores that will remain open at Solomon Pond Mall in Marlborough and elsewhere in Massachusetts, including in Leominster, North Attleborough and Peabody.
JCPenney is one of one of the anchor stores at Natick Mall, along with Macy’s, Lord & Taylor, Sears, Nordstrom and Neiman Marcus.
