No Bail For Teens Charged In 16-Year-Old’s Murder In Dorchester

BOSTON (CBS/AP) — The two teens accused of shooting and killing another teen while he was riding his bicycle in Dorchester were ordered held without bail Monday.

Dushawn Taylor-Gennis, 16, and 14-year-old Raeshawn Moody pleaded not guilty at their arraignment on murder and firearms charges in a packed courtroom in Dorchester District Court.

Both will be tried as adults, even though Moody is only in eighth grade. Neither teen was able to be seen in the courtroom because both hid behind a door.

The boys are charged with killing Jonathan Dos Santos, 16, on Wednesday night.

Prosecutor Jennifer Hickman said Taylor-Gennis and Moody can be seen in surveillance video essentially setting up a trap for Dos Santos before shooting at him five times at the corner of Washington and Fuller Streets.

Hickman said Dos Santos was hit in the back and tried to ride his bike to a nearby business to get help as Taylor-Gennis and Moody ran away.

Defense lawyers had asked that the teens be released to their parents, saying their mothers cooperated with police. A lawyer for Moody said police have the wrong person.

The suspects’ mothers helped turn the boys in over the weekend. One of the mothers drove her son into Boston so he could be arrested and the other mother told the other boy by phone that he had to go to police.

 “It wasn’t an easy decision, but it was the best for the welfare of those young children,” Police Commissioner Bill Evans told WBZ-TV Monday.

Evans said the three lived in the same neighborhood and knew each other. A motive has not been revealed.

The Boston Globe reported that detectives are looking into whether the killing was gang-related and that Dos Santos had recently confided to a basketball coach that other teens were pressuring him to join a gang.

Under Massachusetts law, juveniles charged with murder are exposed to the same penalties as adults and their cases are open to the public, Suffolk County District Attorney Dan Conley’s office said.

Run-D.M.C. Producer Larry Smith Dead at 63

Larry Smith, producer of some of the most cherished hip-hop records of the Eighties, including Run-D.M.C. 's first two albums, died Thursday at the age of 63. Radio host Combat Jack broke the news on Twitter , writing: "Just spoke to his family. RIP Larry Smith, the original King of Beats who passed away last night." A Queens native, Smith began his career as a session musician and quickly struck up a partnership with Kurtis Blow after playing bass on "Christmas Rappin'."  Smith would continue to play on a number of Blow's tracks, co-writing a few as well, including the MC's breakthrough record, "The Breaks,"  which became the first rap record to be certified gold.
