Tina Turner Tribute "Be Tina" to be held in Harlem this Saturday

Tina Turner's career spans more than five decades and the Grammy-award-winning Soul music superstar has won the heart of one Tempest Walker of New York who has decided to plan a 3-hour tribute dedicated to Ms. Turner's music. In an interview with BlackBerry Radio, Tempest explained her reason for producing the event in honor of the icon:

"It was a small portrait of a woman on my grandfather's dresser that I used to walk past all the time. I probably walked past that photo about 15 years with no knowledge of who this woman was in the portrait."

"Many months after my grandfather passed away, I went home to Atlanta to show my grandmother and my family what it was drumming up and the idea that I had [for the Be Tina tribute], she walked me over to the portrait and asked me if I knew who that was. I took a closer look, I could tell that was Tina Turner. To me, that was a sign from that my grandfather approving what I was doing."



The opening act for the Be Tina Tribute, "China" is a Gospel recording artist and singer with over ten years in the industry. The show will be recorded by great directors including Michel "Boogie" Pinckney (Spike Lee) and Stewart Kelly (videogropher and executive producer of the show).

In Tempest's preparation for the Be Tina tribute, she got in shape and lost 20 pounds to capture Tina as close as she possibly could and says she will be ready to perform the three songs this weekend as an excerpt to her full show.

"We want to celebrate the gift of music that she's [Tina] given us," says the film industry professional who has worked in production with many of the greats, including movie producer/director Tyler Perry.


The Be Tina Tribute will be held in Harlem at the Adam Clayton Jr Plaza this Saturday, August 15th from 3:00 p.m. to 6:00 p.m. For more information, visit @BeTinaTribute on Facebook, Twitter and Instagram.

Run-D.M.C. Producer Larry Smith Dead at 63

Larry Smith, producer of some of the most cherished hip-hop records of the Eighties, including Run-D.M.C. 's first two albums, died Thursday at the age of 63. Radio host Combat Jack broke the news on Twitter , writing: "Just spoke to his family. RIP Larry Smith, the original King of Beats who passed away last night." A Queens native, Smith began his career as a session musician and quickly struck up a partnership with Kurtis Blow after playing bass on "Christmas Rappin'."  Smith would continue to play on a number of Blow's tracks, co-writing a few as well, including the MC's breakthrough record, "The Breaks,"  which became the first rap record to be certified gold. Smith then began working with Blow's manager at the time, Russell Simmons. The two co-produced a handful of tracks for Jimmy Spicer – including the oft-sampled "Money (Dollar Bill Y'All)"  – before helping make hip-hop history with Run-D.M.C.'s
