Victim dies in Jackson Square station stabbing; suspect held without bond

BOSTON  -- The victim of a stabbing at Jackson Square station Thursday has died and prosecutors said the suspect confessed on video.
Officials say the 17-year-old victim, Mason Raymond, from Hyde Park, was walking into the Jackson Square station in Jamaica Plain, while the suspect was waiting on a bench inside. Prosecutors said the two got into a fistfight. The suspect, 16-year-old Ronaldo Cepeda from Dorchester, walked away, and then allegedly pulled out a knife and put it behind his back. He then went back inside the station and stabbed the victim just once, puncturing his heart, said prosecutors. The teen collapsed on the sidewalk right outside the train station and the suspect ran home.
Transit Police Chief Kenneth Green said there is surveillance video of the fight and the teen taking out a knife. The station was closed for about two hours after the stabbing and the MBTA was forced to bus passengers out of the station.
In court Friday, prosecutors said the 16-year-old has a history of juvenile violence.
Raymond's mother shook with emotion Friday in court. Police told FOX25 that Raymond and Cepeda, knew each other. Prosecutors revealed Cepeda, a student at Brighton High School, confessed to stabbing Raymond, running away and tossing the knife. A judge ordered Cepeda to be held without bond.
A memorial is growing outside the Jackson Square Station for Raymond. One of his friends says she held his hand while he was laying on the ground.
"I was like, 'Wake up Mason, you're going to pull through!' I thought he was going to make it," his friend said.
And as friends and family mourns, commuters are shaken up.
One commuter said it concerns him  because his "girlfriend lives two blocks from here and takes the T to school!"
We called the MBTA to ask about the action they're taking to keep commuters safe. They emailed us a statement that reads in part: "In light of yesterday's tragic event at the Jackson Sq. MBTA station we will have an increased uniformed presence there and other stops along the Orange Line."
