Philadelphia 76ers Rookie Jahlil Okafor Says Boston Fight ‘Dumb On My Part’
BOSTON (CBS/AP) – Philadelphia 76ers center Jahlil Okafor says he’s embarrassed about a Boston nightclub scuffle captured on video and is dealing with the team and league on possible discipline.
The rookie taken with the third pick in the 2015 draft said after a shootaround Friday that the fight following a loss to the Celtics was “definitely dumb on my part.”
Okafor says he reacted to heckling about the 0-16 Sixers, the only team in the NBA without a win.
TMZ Sports claims the video shows Okafor and some friends getting into a confrontation with a small group of people outside Storyville on Exeter Street after the game.
According to TMZ:
We’re told the altercation began because one of the men in the other group yelled at Jahlil, “The 76ers suck.”
We spoke with a rep for Jahlil who tells us … Okafor says he was being heckled from the moment he left the club and felt threatened because people swarmed him on the street.
A young man said to be Okafor in the video shouts, “We’ve got money” and then a brief fight breaks out. The man TMZ claims is Okafor is seen in the video slamming someone into the side of a car and then throwing punches in the scuffle.
There were no arrests, but Boston Police are investigating the incident.
The victim filed a police report Friday morning, and said that two black males, one believed to be Okafor, “approached his group of friends and quickly began talking to a few of his female friends in an effort obtain their phone numbers.”
The victim says his female friends refused to give their numbers and a verbal altercation ensued. The victim then said Okafor began pushing and punching him.
The victim says he sustained a cut above his eye that required stitches.
“We are aware of the (TMZ) report and we are currently working to gather additional information. Until that time, we will have no further comment,” Sixers spokesman Michael Preston said in an email statement to WBZ.
Okafor, 19, attended Duke for one year and was the third pick in the 2015 NBA Draft. He had 19 points and 9 rebounds against the Celtics Wednesday.
