Kanye West's 'Bulletproof Vest' Rips Off Boston Designer
They say there's a fine line between "genius" and "crazy." Kanye West has been called both by many. New England fans of the Antonio Ansaldi apparel company is calling him "thief" after what Kanye's daughter North West wore at Kanye's fashion show in New York City on Thursday.
Baby North's "baby bulletproof vest" designed by her fashion-forward father, Kanye turns heads. A second look, and a lot of Bostonians and fans of the highly popular Antonio Ansaldi clothing line calling Kanye's style a direct lift from the Boston fashion line, Antonio Ansaldi. Popular in the 90's, the vest (wasn't called "bulletproof vest" by Antonio Ansaldi) was one of the most sought-after articles from the company.
With locations on Newbury Street in Boston, and Washington Street in Dorchester, Massachusetts, Antonio Ansaldi outfitted many rappers for the videos, and was a staple in New England HipHop fashion. Antonio Ennis, founder of Antonio Ansaldi took to Facebook about the theft:
"Kanye
remembers when we came through Chitown all up in Caprini Green projects
with them MadeMen tour buses shuttin' s#yt down on our promo tour. He
seen us rollin' heavy with that Antonio Ansaldi apparel, raid vests and
floss jackets. We had the whole industry askin' us 'Who the f%ck is
this Antonio Ansaldi guy?' Karl Kani used to always tell me how dudes
was inquiring about our fashion designs. We never named ours 'Bulletproof Vests' bcuz we didn't make em to
stop bullets, we made em to stop admirers. A fashion statement we call
"Fashionknowlogy".
Ennis says hardcore Antonio Ansaldi supporters already know the design was born from the mind of his cousin Tangg Thejuice
and himself when Antonio Ansaldi was in the creation stages. The two wanted to produce a garment they knew others would be scared to manufacture. They wanted to shake up the industry. The first one ever made was army
green nappa leather with real Teflon plate inserts. Afterwards they
started making them in nylon, denim and suede.
It's reported that Kim Kardashian fans are angry at Kim for posting photos of Baby North wearing her father's vest. But the real angry fans are the thousands of Antonio Ansaldi fans who believe Kanye West is trying to steal someone's brand and get away with it. Below is Zulu Nation Minister Of Information Quadeer "M.C. Spice" Shakur wearing the Antonio Ansaldi vest in 2004.
